The DIONE workshop SMART agricultural monitoring within the CAP umbrella and beyond took place 25th of November with intent to show and promote the DIONE Toolbox – a ready-to-market solution and unique fusion of innovative technologies in the service of improved agricultural monitoring. The workshop brought together Paying Agencies, Certification Bodies, Agricultural Consultants, Officials from Ministries to abide by the modernised CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) and other agri-related regulations as well as for EO industry players to explore the DIONE business offering.
The workshop kicked off with an opening welcome speech by Ms. Maja Budimir, Project Manager from InoSens, Serbian business consultancy company from Novi Sad and DIONE’s coordinator Mr. Valantis Tsiakos, Scientific Project Manager from I-SENSE, one of the Research Groups of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the National University of Athens in Greece (NTUA), providing a short overview of the DIONE project and workshop itself to all participants.
Mr. Valantis Tsiakos opened the workshop as first speaker. Mr. Tsiakos presented the DIONE concept in terms of the components: EO Component, In-situ Component and Green Accountability Component as well as DIONE products, DIONE Pilots, DIONE Impact etc., as an introduction for the presentations that took place afterwards.
The workshop programme is continued by the presentation of Mr. Nejc Vesel as our second speaker. Mr. Vesel is Data Scientist in Sinergise, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Sinergise is a GIS company building large turn-key geospatial systems in the fields of cloud GIS, agriculture and real-estate administration. Within DIONE, Sinergise is in charge for the development of EO based component. Mr. Vesel presented how the machine learning technology and data fusion & super resolution techniques are used to develop EO based agricultural monitoring system.
Next in the line was a presentation by Mr. Valantis Tsiakos and this time the DIONE’s In-situ component was introduced. Here, farmers as users are representing the focus of this presentation all in order to fully exploit the potential that geotagged photos with high degree of quality and trust are bringing directly taken from the ground. Mr. Tsiakos brought and explained how the component foresees to establish an ecosystem of low-cost smart tools to complement EO based monitoring. This implies a geotagged photos framework (consisting of mobile application for data collection and a backend part for integrity/anonymization of received data), portable soil spectrometers working in tandem with mobile application, a backend tool to support pre-processing, validation and management of soil spectra received, machine learning models to convert initially soil spectra to soil properties (point observations) and then the latter to maps covering larger areas.
Mr. Konstantinos Karyotis was the third DIONE presenter. Mr. Karyotis is a Scientific Associate from i-BEC, international organisation and a public-private network that supports and co-develops with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki state of the art technologies and innovative research, for sustainable management of natural resources and environmental protection. Mr. Karyotis presented in detail portable soil spectrometer developed in the context of the project’s context, representing the second part of the DIONE In-situ Component.
Next in a row was Mr. Luka Glušica, Frontend Web Developer in GILab. GILab is a company from Belgrade, Serbia involved into development of innovative solutions based on ICT and Geoinformatics. Mr. Glušica brought his experience in development of the third DIONE’s component – Green Accountability Component. More precisely, he gave a live demonstration of the Compliance Monitoring Tool and to participants with the guidance: how to register as well as how to use the tool itself.
Mr. Giorgos Gkotsis closed the workshop as the fifth speaker. Mr. Gkotsis is a Frontend Web Developer in Core Innovation company from Athens, Greece. The main activity of the company lies in the Research & Development field, aiming to develop innovative products based on experience gained with the collaboration with European industrial and academic partners. Mr. Gkotsis presented the Environmental Performance Tool & its visualization concept. As previous colleague Mr. Glušica, Mr. Gkotsis gave a live demonstration and guidance on using the tool.
All presentations were followed by a Q&A session with participants using the Zoom interactive concept designed by Mr. Nemanja Nićin, Project Manager from InoSens, which led to fruitful discussions and useful conclusions on the relevant topics to the workshop’s participants.
